George Mellen

George Mellen of Franklin passed away on February 2, 2013. He was 93 years old. Born in New Bedford, George was a United States Navy Veteran of World War II. Following the war, George owned and operated a number of local restaurants in the Boston area including the Tam O Shanter in Brookline, Green St. Station in Jamaica Plain, Big Jim's Shanty Lounge, Mellen's Tavern and the Worthy Lunch, all in Boston, as well as the Gazebo Cafe in New Orleans, LA. A lover of music, George's involvement in booking bands at the Green St. Station in JP led to his induction into the Boston Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. George was the dear and devoted husband of over 60 years of the late Rayner E. (Bensusan). Loving father of George Mellen Jr. of Medfield and Douglass B. Mellen of Franklin. Cherished grandfather “Duke” of Douglass, Danielle, Elizabeth and Christopher Mellen. Dear brother of Irene Benno of West Roxbury, Elaine Day of Canada, Christopher Mellen Jr. of Chelmsford and the late William, James, Charles and Nicholas Mellen. He is also survived by several loving nieces and nephews. George's Funeral Service was held at the Kfoury Keefe Funeral Home on February 5, 2013. George was laid to rest with military honors at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.
