Janet
Teebagy
June 26, 1930 – March 31, 2026
Janet S. Teebagy of West Roxbury passed away on March 31, 2026 at the age of 95.
She was quite the well-rounded, knowledgeable, and articulate matriarch of her family, from being a devoted wife to Andrew, mother to three children, and “Mema” to her grandkids.
As a mother, Janet was conscientious and thoughtful as she guided her three children through their formative years as they embarked on their religious journey in life. It was a profoundly important part of their upbringing and childhood.
Janet was always incredibly proud of her home, and she ensured it was maintained in a meticulous manner, ready to host guests at a moment’s notice. There was hardly a time when there wasn’t a freshly made, home-cooked meal waiting to be enjoyed by her loving family.
Janet made it a point to teach her firstborn, Dianne, the finer things in life. From proper etiquette on how to set a table to entertaining guests and using fine china for special occasions, Janet wanted to model the right way to do things for her children.
She was ahead of her time when it came to being an independent woman in a predominantly male world. Janet would take the train to work as a book keeper in the garment business.
Janet would frequently open her home to her children’s friends, and she would always prepare beautiful lunches for them. After years of making things work, Janet and Andrew finally were able to purchase their dream home in West Roxbury and couldn't have been prouder or loved that home more. Janet and Andrew's priority was their three children, Dianne, Andrew and John and making sure they all had excellent educations.
Mema wasn't like the traditional grandmother and was quite blunt and to the point. She taught Anthony, Kayla, Katherine, Alexander, Elizabeth and Nathaniel the importance of saving money and how important an education is. Mema was wise above all, even when you didn't ask for it. More often than not, she was right in her advice. She was very direct and spoke her mind.
One way that she expressed her love was through her cooking. She made the best grape leaves with her homegrown leaves from the backyard, kibbe, sauce and meatballs, meatloaf, and a mean chocolate chip cookie. She would walk the grandkids to the park near their home so we could play. We will always remember the smell of Yardley soap in her bathroom and the sound of classical music from the radio in her bedroom.
The family spent many nights enjoying her favorite room in their home, and that was the screened-in porch. She loved her family above all but we remember she also cherished the black fur coat Jido bought her, knick knacks, her bone china tea cup collection, her costume jewelry collection that she always let us play with, plants and gardening. Rest in the sweetest peace, Janet, Mom, and Mema.
Janet was the wife of the late Andrew C. Teebagy. Mother of Dianne DiFonso of North Andover, her partner Charles Hahn and her late husband Panfilo "Ben" DiFonso; Andrew C. Teebagy Jr. and his wife Linda of Burlington; Very Rev. John K. Teebagy and his wife Joan of Westwood. Grandmother "Mema" of Anthony DiFonso and his wife BethAnne, Kayla Wieners and her husband Steven, Katherine Dooley and her husband Jeremy, Alexander Teebagy, Elizabeth Teebagy, Nathaniel Teebagy and his wife Jana. "Great Mema" of Ben, Jack, Shane, Luke, Reed and McKenna. Sister of Carole Hamaty, Charlene Perry, and Roger Shibley.
Funeral services were private. Please make contributions in Janet's memory to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital 501 St. Jude Place Memphis, TN 38105. www.stjude.org
