Ronald J. Kirby

Ronald J. Kirby, age 93, passed away on September 11, 2026. He departed this life on a date forever remembered by our nation - a particularly poignant date for a proud United States Army veteran who served his country with honor during the Korean War.

Ronald proudly served in the United States Army during the Korean War, attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. His military service, patriotism, and love of country remained a source of great pride throughout his life.

Ronald was a man of extraordinary talent, and music was one of the great passions of his life. He earned a degree from Berklee College of Music and became a legendary, world-renowned darbuka drummer. His mastery of the darbuka and his passion for traditional Arab music earned him admiration and respect throughout the musical community. Music was far more than something Ronald performed - it was part of who he was. Through his music, he brought people together, entertained generations, and created memories that would remain long after the final beat of the drum.

Ronald's talents extended from music into another great passion: the culinary arts. Following formal culinary education, he built a distinguished career as an executive gourmet chef. Much like his music, cooking was more than a profession. Food was another way Ronald expressed his creativity, shared his talents, and brought family and friends together.

Brotherhood was another important part of Ronald's life. He was a proud and devoted Freemason for 56 years, living the principles of brotherhood, charity, fellowship, and service. His more than half-century as a Mason was an accomplishment he treasured and an important part of the legacy he leaves behind.

Yet among all his accomplishments - soldier, musician, chef, and Mason - none was more important than his family.

Ronald was predeceased by his beloved wife, Zoubida (Marchany) Kirby; his parents, Joseph G. and Nellie (Behan) Kirby; his sister, Mary (Kirby) Abdelahad and her husband, Anton Abdelahad; his brother, George J. Kirby and his wife, Roberta Kirby; and his sister, Nelda Kirby.

He is survived by his son, Joseph G. Kirby and his wife, Catherine M. Kirby; his beloved grandchildren, Christina Dufresne, Veronica Dufresne, and Ronald J. Kirby; and his cherished great-grandchildren.

He is also lovingly remembered by his nieces and nephews, their spouses and families, each of whom held a special place in his life and shared in the many memories that made his family so important to him.

During Ronald's final week, his family remained at his side in the hospital. Joseph, Catherine, and his grandchildren surrounded him with love, comfort, and the presence of family. They stayed beside him throughout that final journey, ensuring that he was never alone. When Ronald passed on September 11, his family was there with him, just as he had been there for them throughout their lives.

His music may have grown quiet and his kitchen may now be still, but the rhythms he played, the meals he prepared, the lessons he taught, and the memories he created will live on. His legacy will continue through his family and through the countless lives he touched during his remarkable 93 years.

Ronald J. Kirby will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever carried in the hearts of those who loved him.

Ronald's Funeral Service will be held Tuesday September 15, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. at the Church of  St. John of Damascus 300 West Street Dedham.  Visitation in the Church Tuesday beginning at 10:00 a.m.  Ronald will be laid to rest at Mount Hope Cemetery 355 Walk Hill Street Boston.
