Ruth Josephine Kennedy, 95 years young, of Roslindale, MA recently passed away with her niece by her side. She was the eldest living of her three siblings, Dorothy ( Kennedy) Ribero, Jack, and Joan Kennedy. She was the daughter of John and Josephine of Roslindale, MA who owned the Birch Flower Shop.
This is where Ruth found her true passion, creating bouquets and connecting with people. She started working there at the age of 14 and later in her adult life became the proud owner and operator for over 70 years. She was a strong, smart, independent, talented woman who loved being with people. In her early years when she wasn't working she enjoyed playing the piano, organ, knitting and sewing.
Although Ruth never married she had a meaningful relationship with her long-time companion Dick (who has since passed). During their time together they enjoyed traveling, but one place they loved to venture to was Castle Island. That is where they would enjoy their hot dogs and fried clams on a hot summer night.
During her last years, Ruth enjoyed her time at Standish, which was like a second family to her. She made many friends, enjoyed reading, playing games, or whatever other activity was going on, and watching movies at night. Her all time favorite activity was bingo on Friday. She was a devout Catholic, so she would also attend Mass and communion days at Standish.
Ruth did not have any children of her own, but she was a loving aunt who enjoyed sharing family stories, and history with her nieces and nephews, as well as teaching them about the flower business. Ruth is survived by her nieces, nephews, great nieces, nephews, and sister in law. She will be surely missed.
Ruth's Funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday August 10, 2026 at 10:00 a.m. at St John Chrysostom Church 4750 Washington St. West Roxbury, MA. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Ruth will be laid to rest at St. Joseph Cemetery. At Ruth's request, there will be no visiting hours.
