Jeanne Segal Rees died Friday morning June 9, 2023, peacefully and surrounded by family at the age of 76. Jeanne was born on May 25, 1947, in Cincinnati, Ohio. She lived a full life with her husband of fifty-four years John Rees on the Northfield Mount Hermon campus and rolling hills of Western Massachusetts. She attended Shimer College, where she met her husband John, and later the University of Massachusetts where she received her BA in mathematics. She was a teacher at Northfield Mount Hermon school for over 30 years.
Jeanne was an amazing mother to Jonah and Sam Rees, and devoted grandmother known as Granny or Nee to Zach, Owen, and Laila Rees. She was an award-winning and beloved mathematics teacher, doting dorm parent, loyal friend, expert knitter and cross-stitcher, and damn good New York Times crossword puzzler. Her other favorite section of the Times was the obituaries. Fascinated by the lives of others, even people she did not know, she appreciated and enjoyed sharing good stories and good writing.
She is preceded by her father Abraham Segal, mother Roslyn Segal, and brother Martin Segal. She is survived by her husband John Rees, sons Jonah and Sam Rees, daughters in-law Christina and Jill Rees, grandchildren Zach, Owen and Laila Rees and her sister Linda Plaut, brother-in-law Frank Plaut, sister-in-law Susan Rees, brother-in-law Fred Rees, and the many students that she taught and cared for over her career.
A celebration of Jeanne's life will be held on Saturday, August 12, 2023.
