Joan Fox Obituary

Joan M. (Cameron) Fox, of Kingston, formerly of West Roxbury, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, December 2, 2021. She was 84 years old.

Joan was born in Brighton and as a child moved to Roslindale. She attended Roslindale High School, where she met the love of her life, George Fox. They were both graduates of the Class of 1955.

After high school Joan attended the Mass General School of Nursing. In 1958 she proudly graduated as a registered nurse and shortly after, George proposed marriage. In September of 1959 they were married and quickly began expanding their family. Four daughters later the family was complete.

Music was a big part of Joan’s life. Joan and George met and sang together in the Holy Name Glee Club. They were also known for their moves on the dance floor. In later years, there was often music playing in the background; everything from Jazz and Ragtime to Classical and Doo Wop, but they loved Show Tunes the best. They passed their love of music on to their girls.

Joan made nursing her career. For 22 years she worked tirelessly alongside Dr. Charles Easterday, as his private OB/GYN nurse. She began her work with him at the Boston-Lying Inn for Women, which later merged with the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital creating Brigham and Women’s Hospital. After he retired, other doctors and nurses clamored for her to fill in all of their empty shifts. She was a treasured

professional! Joan was a caring and compassionate nurse both on the job and off. Many times she would be called to duty in order to remove the stitches of injured neighbors.

Joan loved to travel, especially sailing on the tall ships known as Windjammers. Her travels took her to many islands throughout the Caribbean. Other traveling adventures took her to Alaska, Arizona, New Mexico, Washington State, Canada and France. Summer vacations entailed camping adventures in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. She was proud to call Terrace Pines campground her summer home for 55 seasons.

Joan’s true passion was her family. She was a devoted mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Joan was known as “Nana” to her grandchildren and “Nana Banana” to her great-grandchildren. She lived for their visits! Joan was an amazing mother to her daughters. She showed them how to be strong women and reach for the stars. Her wisdom, hugs and kisses will truly be missed by all who knew and loved her.

Joan was the dear and devoted wife of the late George P. Fox. Loving mother of Melissa Fox Lincoln and her husband Robert of Fairhaven, Katrina Barry and her husband James of Medford, Deidre Fox of West Roxbury and Gretchen Fox and her husband Paul O’Brien of Kingston and Linda Foley and her husband Greg of North Easton. Cherished Nana of Jayme Heon Sweeney and her husband Joseph, Gabrielle Heon, Victoria “Tori” Barry, Jim Barry Jr, Ashley Frank and Rachel Allen and her husband Brad. Great grandmother of Faith, Kirsten, Noah, Amir and Nikolina. Dear sister-in-law of Ronald Fox of Kingston.  She is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews and her goddaughters Karin McCarthy Mazzella, Patricia Russo Gibbs and Michelle Gorman Coill. She shared a special friendship with longtime friends Joan Marie Gorman and Jane Silveria.
