Laurice “Morocco” Teebagy (Rizk) was born in Aitaneet, Lebanon on November 14, 1924.
She is survived by several nieces and nephews. Joseph Rizk of Westwood; Josephine Shamoon and her family of Westwood, Caesar Rizk and his family of Brockton, Samira Giannarros and her family of Easton, James Rizk and his family of Walpole, David Rizk and his family of Westwood and Fouad Hanna and his family of Florida. She also leaves behind many beloved neighbors, friends and caring staff at Ellis Nursing Home where she has resided for the past 18 months.
Morocco was predeceased by her late husband Joseph E. Teebagy, Brother Phillip Rizk, Sister Martha Hanna and Sister-in-law Kassia Rizk.
All who knew her will miss her dearly and always remember her legacy and her beautiful smile that would light up any room she entered. Although never having children of her own, she was nicknamed “Mama Rocky” and helped raise her goddaughter. She treated all of her nieces, nephews and their families as her own.
Morocco left Lebanon at a young age to perform dance professionally. She danced throughout Europe before arriving in Boston via New York in the early 1940’s. She was proud to become an American citizen in 1963.
She quickly gained fame as one of Boston’s most famous and first Belly Dancers. With her late husband, she managed one of the first middle eastern nightclubs in Boston in 1952- The Club Zara. Then in 1955, the El Morocco. Belly Dancing and singing was Morocco’s greatest passion. She was a renowned belly dancer who “sang and danced into everyone’s hearts”. She was generous and kind. In addition to her love for singing and dancing she also loved spending time with her family, cooking Lebanese specialties, playing cards and bingo.
Services will be private and a memorial in Morocco’s honor will be held in the near future.
