Nicholas “Nick” Samra passed away peacefully on Sunday May 28, 2023.
He was born in Pawtucket, Rhode Island on February 1, 1931 to Michael and Mary Samra. He spent his youth in Rhode Island but began his business and family life once he moved to Boston. He served in the U.S. Army from April 20 1953 to March 17 1955 receiving a National Defense Service Medal and was a third degree Mason of the Mount Herman Lodge in Medford, MA. He lived primarily in Medford, Winchester, and Lexington Massachusetts for more than 70 years.
Nick was both an entrepreneur and a musician. In both cases he was self taught. As an entrepreneur, in 1965 he founded Metropolitan Door Closer Company. With determination and mechanical ingenuity he established a reputation as a reliable and technically proficient master at commercial building access. The successor company today remains a thriving family business. His larger passion, however, was music. A master at the oud and a talented vocalist, over decades he led at least a dozen multi-cultural bands packing night clubs and entertaining audiences at weddings, christenings, and haflis (Middle Eastern parties). He embedded a love for music in his family and included his two sons in his band, the Near East Echos or Nick Samra and Ensemble. The Boston Globe dubbed him “King of the Belly Dancers.”
His biggest passion however, was his surviving wife of 62 years Virginia “Ginger” Samra. He defined devoted husband by adoring Ginger to his last day. He will be missed by Ginger, his sons Michael (wife Nicole Nicosia) and David (wife Erica Pearson) and his daughter Nicole Salemme (husband Philip Salemme). He was also loved by his nieces Susan Greene (husband Larry Greene) and Kori Sahin (husband Kent) and nephew Michael Christopher Wyshak. His eyes however always lit up with his grandchildren Victoria and Julia Salemme, Lily and Grace Samra, and Gabriel, and Layla Samra.
We will sorely miss his affable character, his sense of humor, and his example of a loving husband.
Nick's Funeral Service will be held at 12 noon on Thursday, June 1, 2023 at The Church of St. John of Damascus, 300 West St. Dedham. Visitation in the Church from 10:00 - 11:45 a.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend.
