Nicolas Poulopoulos, “Nick”, age 80, passed away on Friday, June 16, 2023 at his summer home in West Harwich.
Born to the late George and Georgia Poulopoulos, Nick was the third of five children, and grew up in the small village of Maniati, Arcadia, Greece. After serving in the Greek Army, Nick immigrated to Boston to be with his brother, Bill. He began a career in the restaurant industry, where he met his wife Ann Tarallo, with whom he shared 51 years of marriage. In 1979 he opened the Apollo Restaurant and Function Facility in Norwood. For 35 years he offered excellent customer service and developed many long-lasting relationships along the way.
Nick enjoyed vegetable gardening, cooking, fishing, hunting, and cheering on his Boston sports teams, but his greatest devotion was to his cherished family. He lovingly raised three daughters with his wife Ann, and valued special relationships with his in-laws and many nieces and nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews. Whether cheering on his daughters on the soccer field or tennis courts, hosting holiday celebrations with his extended family, or sitting proudly at graduations, Nick’s unwavering commitment to his family was immeasurable. Later in his life, Nick experienced the same joys cheering on his grandchildren and continued his tradition of being his grandchildren’s proudest fan.
Nick’s happiest times were summer days with family and friends at their beach house on Cape Cod. Nick and Ann would welcome their daughters’ families for the summer, enjoying each day with their six cherished grandchildren. Nick loved to host extended family, friends and neighbors. Some of his fondest memories included 4th of July cookouts and fireworks, swimming in the ocean, fishing off the jetty, boat rides, making s’mores and watching Jeopardy surrounded by his entire family. After his retirement, NIck would travel to Greece each September to visit his family and friends in Athens and the small village where he was raised.
Nick is survived by his loving wife, Ann (Tarallo); his daughters Georgia and husband Rawley Hessick of Kensington, MD, Luciann, and Julie Poulopoulos, both of West Roxbury; and his six cherished grandchildren, Nicholas, John, Tyler and Luke Hessick, and, Lucy and Julia McMullen. He is survived by his brother Theodoros and his wife, Dina Poulopoulos of Athens, Greece; and his siblings-in-laws Helen Tarallo and Mary Mazza, both of West Roxbury; Asima Poulos of Natick, and George Kesaris of Athens, Greece. He lovingly leaves his nieces and nephews including Angela Mazza and husband Kevin; George and Ethel Poulos; Maria Poulos and her husband Dimitri; and John and Leesa Mazza; David and Erica Mazza, and Peter Mazza, and all of their families. He also leaves many beloved nieces and nephews, and a great-niece and a great-nephew in Athens, Greece, who he enjoyed visiting each year; and many cousins and friends both in the United States and in Greece. Nick is preceded in death by his parents George and Georgia Poulopoulos, his siblings Eleftherios Poulopoulos, Vasilios Poulopoulos and Fotini Kessaris, his mother-in-law Lucia Tarallo, and his brother-in-law Edward Mazza.
Nick was a member of St. Nectarios Greek Orthodox Church, and a long-time member of both the Arcadian Society of MA and the Millis Fin, Fur and Feather Club. Although Nick will be deeply missed, he will always be remembered for his kindness, sense of humor, generosity and most of all his warm smile and welcomeness.
